Never give up!

I have been training with Venetia already for 3 seasons and two marathons together.

During the first 2 years at the OCI running team, we went through the basics of running and training. There we trained together for the the 2016 marathon of Barcelona and we managed it to run it just under the 4h.

Last year we started again under the Chemelot Brightlands running team, and we targeted the Amsterdam marathon as the great goal of our 2018 season. We set an ambitious target, which we moved forward through the season to make it (definitely for me!) a Big Hairy Audacious Goal of 3h30m.

The challenge was not easy and we promised lots of discipline, to listen to each other and follow the scheme (yes that I had to promise!). We combined it with dieting and core trainings. I lost more than 23 kilos and gained a lot of muscles in one year. We combined long easy runs with interval trainings. And lots of additional core and body exercises to make it stronger and faster. During the season I improved in all my short distances runs and broke all my personal bests at 1-5-10-10M and HM… And not by a little… Really long minutes…

For the big day, the day of Marathon, everything was ready… I have never been so trained and so fit. The start was good and until the first half everything went according to plan but then I crashed… Badly… I finished the marathon but far from my goal…

I had tough days after the run… Great feeling of disappointment…even shame… I felt Venetia suffering with me… A couple weeks later we had lunch together and we analyzed what went wrong… Probably a combination of different things: running at the edge, too fast start, not listening to my body during race, too much running without letting my body rest properly (that’s what I meant following the scheme)… Any of these reasons or a combination of them… It doesn’t matter…  It was not meant to be…

I have done the marathon 1000’s in my head… Would I have done something different? Probably… But you know, if you want to achieve your best, you need to run at the edge, you need to give it all… And if you don’t try it, you never know… I tried and I gave my best…  unfortunately, it didn’t work for me…

This time…

Because I am already thinking on my next marathon…

And obviously together with Venetia… The one who helps to find my limits, to never give up, the one who cheers me when I’m down, to be wise, to take care of my body and my mind… My coach…

  1. Asking questions are truly fastidious thing if you are not understanding anything completely, but this
piece of writing presents nice understanding yet.

  2. Having read this I believed it was rather informative.
I appreciate you taking the time and effort to put this short article together.
I once again find myself spending way too much time both reading and leaving comments.
But so what, it was still worthwhile!

  3. Ahaa, its nice dialogue about this post here at this blog,
I have read all that, so now me also commenting at this place.
